A House in Fez: Building a Life in the Ancient Heart of Morocco by Suzanna ClarkeWhen Suzanna Clarke and her husband bought a dilapidated house in the Moroccan town of Fez, their friends thought they were mad. Located in a maze of donkey-trod alleyways, the house - a traditional riad - was beautiful but in desperate need of repair. Walls were in danger of collapse, the plumbing non-existent. While neither Suzanna nor her husband spoke Arabic, and had only a smattering of French, they were determined to restore the building to its original splendour, using only traditional craftsmen and handmade materials. But they soon found that trying to do business in Fez was like being transported back several centuries in time and so began the remarkable experience that veered between frustration, hilarity and moments of pure exhilaration.
But restoring the riad was only part of their immersion in the rich and colourful life of this ancient city. A House in Fez is a journey into Moroccan culture, revealing its day-to-day rhythms, its customs and festivals; its history, Islam, and Sufi rituals; the lore of djinns and spirits; the vibrant life-filled market places and the irresistible Moroccan cuisine. And above all, into the lives of the people - warm, friendly, and hospitable.
Beautifully descriptive and infused with an extraordinary sense of place, this is a compelling account of one couples adventures in ancient Morocco.

You can help! Text is inconsistent - one line claims Greek origin, the next line says Turkish. I've no Idea which, but it ain't both. Should this be moved to Fez hat , or is there another article of clothing known as a "fez"? Dysprosia , 20 Sep UTC. The First Crusade didn't start until , so I'm not sure how that works. I agree.

Camel man. I know this photograph is a bit disturbing. But oh well it is a part of the culture. And you were not the one, who almost bumped into that camel head. I can assure you, that it is not the most sanitary place. And yes, it is not pretty.
The name "fez" refers to the Moroccan city of Fez capital of the Kingdom of Morocco until , where the dye to color the hat was extracted from crimson berries. The fez may have originated in ancient Greece , or the Balkans , initially during the Byzantine reign , and subsequently, during the Ottoman period, various Slavs , mostly Bosniaks and Serbs , started wearing the head-wear. The fez is a part of the traditional clothing of Cyprus , and is still worn by some Cypriots today. Traditionally, women wore a red fez over their heads, instead of a headscarf , while men wore a black or red cap. In his journey to Cyprus, John Pinkerton describes the fez, "a red cap turned up with fur", as "the proper Greek dress". His modernized military adopted Western style uniforms and, as headdresses, the fez with a cloth wrapped around it.
