Please refresh the page and retry. Because the necessity of a fifth instalment in this already long-winded franchise — particularly six years after the weak fourth, On Stranger Tides, failed to make an impression — is not exactly shiningly apparent. And action sequences, of course, two of which really click. That mission gives him common purpose with the somewhat fresher-faced Henry Turner Brenton Thwaites , who needs the same magical object — seemingly a kind of Swiss Army McGuffin — to save his father from a curse. The further adventures of these two would be a tantalising prospect were this the first film in a franchise rather than the fifth one.
The fifth film in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is the most enjoyable sequel so far, thanks to a fresh-off-the-boat directing team and a script that actively strives to recapture the magic of the first film. Opening with a brief reminder of the fate of Orlando Bloom's Will Turner in the previous films, the film centres on Will's teenage son Henry Brenton Thwaites , who has vowed to end his father's curse by tracking down Poseidon's Trident. After running foul of the authorities, Henry receives help from fellow fugitives Captain Jack Sparrow Johnny Depp and plucky astronomer Carina Smyth Kaya Scodelario , both of whom have their own reasons for pursuing the Trident. Their mission is given an added sense of urgency by the fact that ship of undead soldiers is hot on their trail, captained by fearsome pirate hunter Armando Salazar Javier Bardem , who has a vendetta against Sparrow for consigning him to a watery grave. Thwaites and Scodelario both deliver spirited performances, generating palpable chemistry and giving the series its most appealing romance since Bloom and Knightley.
What a strange franchise the Pirates films are. Once a surprise box office juggernaut back in , subsequent sequels have turned it into a series of films known more for squandered potential than the soaring heights of its first outing. This film is oddly placed as a continuation, a soft reboot and a final hurrah all at once. Fate throws them both together with Jack, who has lost his way and become a land pirate, and together they search for the trident of Poseidon while dodging the fearsome Captain Salazar Javier Bardem. The reason Jack Sparrow became such a fan-favourite was the balance of humour and genuine danger.
