Never look a snake in the eyes
Sammy Keyes and the Search for Snake Eyes by Wendelin Van DraanenThe most winning junior detective ever in teen lit. (Take that, Nancy Drew!) --Midwest Childrens Book Review
Sammys softball team is in contention for the Junior Sluggers Cup, and all she wants to do is hunker down behind the home plate and catch strikes. But Heather Acosta brings new meaning to the term foul ball as she schemes to get Sammy kicked off the team.
Then Sammy is thrown a wild pitch by a frantic girl at the mall. The girl asks Sammy to watch her bag and dashes off before Sammy discovers that the bag shes left holding contains a baby! When the girl doesnt return, Sammy decides to go find her. A heart-pounding search ensues, and leads to some situations that are definitely not covered in the softball playbook.
The Sammy Keyes mysteries are fast-paced, funny, thoroughly modern, and true whodunits. Each mystery is exciting and dramatic, but its the drama in Sammys personal life that keeps readers coming back to see what happens next with her love interest Casey, her soap-star mother, and her mysterious father.

Eye contact with your python?
For the study, 20 healthy young adult volunteers were paired up and asked to stare, emotionless, into each others' eyes as they sat in a dimly lit room which the researchers chose because the lighting enhances facial features. As a control, the 20 other participants were asked to sit in the same room and stare at a black wall for 10 minutes. None of the participants were told what the researchers were testing for. Afterwards, the participants filled out questionnaires about the experience. The self-reports revealed that the people who engaged in interpersonal staring were very likely to experience symptoms of dissociation, including a loss of connection with reality, a feeling of time dragging on, and changes in sound and color perception.
Snakes are some of the most feared and reviled creatures on Earth, perhaps for good reason. Not everybody hates serpents, however, as Kerry Stewart found out by talking to a herpetologist and a snake-handling Pentecostal minister. Herpetologist Leon Limberiou has a room full of snakes in his house: taipans, king browns and death adders to name a few. A five-metre-long python in a two-storey glass terrarium immediately got my attention. I've had a lady spit on me before, telling me I was doing Satan's work, with the devil being reincarnated as a snake. While I sat there he took a range of snakes out of their boxes and, to make a point about snakes being more afraid of me than me of them, almost put one on the floor.

I'm curious about how good pythons are at making eye contact. This has come about because even though I know my python is not out to get me, he sure makes it look like he is. When I am holding him and just being still seated, with him almost on my lap , he will look right up at me and slowly increase his 's' shape, creeping up closer to my face.
