When infamous crime writer Mark "Chopper" Read and Archibald Prize winner Adam Cullen team up, the result is not for the faint-hearted. A children's book it almost certainly isn't. A fable, in the tradition of dark and Gothic storytelling, it certainly is. In a collaboration that already has the art world, literary circles and parents' groups raising eyebrows, Cullen and Read have created Hooky the Cripple: The Grim Tale of a Hunchback who Triumphs. It is a curiously poetic little book, a fine balance between mawkish tragedy, revenge thriller and ironic courtroom drama. Read's workmanlike approach avoids literary pretensions while Cullen's crude, rather Gothic illustrations capture the drama as though he were a furtive reporter at a crime scene, notepad always within reach, quickly breaking down the scenes in harsh, aggressive lines. Neither figure needs much introduction.
Notorious criminal Mark "Chopper" Read today dared authorities to ban his latest book in which an annoying butcher is stabbed 21 times in the head. At a launch in Sydney today, the year-old described Hooky the Cripple as an attack on political correctness and said it was just an "old Aesop fable". Chopper's book tells the story of a hunchback who is so enraged by a butcher's bullying that he stabs him 21 times in the head. Chopper, convicted for armed robberies, assaults and other violent crimes, was released from prison in and has since reinvented himself as a successful author. AccessEd, the Queensland government body which reviews educational resources, has recommended Hooky the Cripple for secondary schools. The book was based on Aesop's Fables, if someone is pushed so far, they will eventually retaliate, he said.
