What makes Barbarossa unique among crusading monarchs was not his reign, his life, or his deeds, which were all noteworthy, but his death. Barbarossa, or Red Beard, ruled the Holy Roman Empire from to , a lengthy reign of almost four decades. Elected by his fellow noblemen, Frederick Barbarossa set out to unite the warring houses of Germany and bring relative stability to the Empire. At this he was largely successful. It was a lifelong undertaking, and some argue that the aging Frederick led the Third Crusade as a means of unifying, once and for all, the German nobility under his authority.
He is generally considered to be one of the greatest Holy Roman Emperors during medieval times. He formulated the Roman rule of law which was among the initial steps to consolidate the power of state against that of Church. Barbarossa was born in and became Duke of southern German region of Swabia in He was also elected as the King of Germany on 4 March and was crowned on 9 March He died in while leading an expedition on the Third Crusade.
