As Above, So Below (2014) - It Can't Bring Back the Dead Scene (5/10) - Movieclips

When modern science extended the reach of its observation to the galaxies above and the microbes below, it made a surprising discovery: an atom proved strikingly similar to a solar system. Both were comprised of particles kept in orbit by the gravity of an energetic core. Modern technology had reiterated the wisdom of the ancients, who coined the very same discovery in the adage: As Above so Below.

As above, so below

As a part of esoteric belief, there are many applications and specific interpretations of the phrase, but many general explanations can be given for the phrase. The phrase comes from a Hermetic text known as the Emerald Tablet. The Hermetic texts are almost years old and have been incredibly influential in occult, philosophical and religious views of the world throughout that period. In Western Europe, they gained prominence in the Renaissance, when large numbers of intellectual works were introduced and reintroduced to the area after the Middle Ages. The oldest copy we have of the Emerald Tablet is in Arabic, and that copy claims to be a translation of Greek. To read it in English requires translation, and deep theological, philosophical and esoteric works are often difficult to translate. As such, different translations phrase the line differently.

This idea is central to many cultures, religions and belief systems — though many people do not fully understand the reasons why. We prefer the snappier translation, and so did Renaissance Europe — which is how this idea has endured so long. The first meaning is a simple one. They are not two things connected by another thing, not when it comes down to it. Instead, they are one thing — but separated. The consequences are clear: the actions you take on the physical plane have a real effect on your spiritual self — and vice versa, of course. Another meaning is a little more involved but is central to modern thought surrounding spirituality and metaphysics.

We humans who live on the so below are made of these same heavenly energies of that which is as above. Hence, the microcosm is oneself, and the macrocosm is the universe. Manly P. Our immortal souls belong to the Creator like the stars in the heavens. Humans are made of the heavens who are found among the stars and planets.

The 16th-century scholar Chrysogonus Polydorus provides the following version translated from the original Arabic into Latin:. Quod est inferius est sicut quod est superius. Et quod est superius est sicut quod est inferius, ad perpetranda miracula rei unius.
