Wuthering Heights Trailer (2009)

Wuthering Heights

H eathcliff: two syllables conjuring desolate space and dizzying altitude. From the start, the film sweeps away the period choreography of the conventional literary adaptation, sweeps it away so thoroughly that for the first few minutes I thought that this Wuthering Heights must be set a hundred years after a nuclear strike. This version brings the story back to a kind of social-realist year zero. It dispenses with the "flashback" overture, plunging more or less straight into the action, but like the William Wyler version with Laurence Olivier it restricts itself to the "first generation" half of the book. The real, unpretty toughness of the Yorkshire moor has perhaps never been represented more matter-of-factly, nor the hardscrabble existence of those who might have really lived in that farmhouse in the 19th century. This world is elemental, almost primeval, and the gap between human and beast is narrowed.

This Wuthering Heights film makes its intentions clear from its opening scene, which consists of Heathcliff James Howson bashing his head against the wall of the house that he and his lifelong love, Cathy Kaya Scodelario , grew up in. From there, Arnold makes a number of choices that toy with the accepted notions of what you can do with a literary adaptation or a period piece. Arnold captures the bleak beauty of the Moors in a stark, unvarnished manner that gives the film an uncomfortable, oppressive atmosphere that wonderfully complements the overwhelming, inarticulate passion at the centre of the film. As on her previous film, the superb Fish Tank, Arnold casts some non-professional actors in key roles namely Howson, Solomon Glave as Young Heathcliff and Shannon Beer as Young Cathy that, at times, bring rawness and intensity to their roles, but at others just feel awkward. Wuthering Heights is a bold, audacious work that cuts to the violent beating height of a classic.

Post a Comment. Last week I posted the first installment in my Wuthering Heights series: my interview with Shao'ri Morris , the actress starring as Catherine Earnshaw in the upcoming movie. Today I've got not one but two absolute exclusive features: the fist trailer and an interview with director and screenplay writer, Nina Elisaveta Abrahall. She kindly answered all my questions, even the most insidious ones, with generosity and open-mindedness. You know, I even dared ask whether we truly needed a new version of Emily Bronte's novel after so many had been already made. I think she has a point there!
