Q & A by Vikas Swarup

Vikas Swarups spectacular debut novel opens in a jail cell in Mumbai, India, where Ram Mohammad Thomas is being held after correctly answering all twelve questions on Indias biggest quiz show, Who Will Win a Billion? It is hard to believe that a poor orphan who has never read a newspaper or gone to school could win such a contest. But through a series of exhilarating tales Ram explains to his lawyer how episodes in his life gave him the answer to each question.

Ram takes us on an amazing review of his own history - from the day he was found as a baby in the clothes donation box of a Delhi church to his employment by a faded Bollywood star to his adventure with a security-crazed Australian army colonel to his career as an overly creative tour guide at the Taj Mahal.

Vikas Swarups Q & A is a beguiling blend of high comedy, drama, and romance that reveals how we know what we know - not just about trivia, but about life itself. Cutting across humanity in all its squalor and glory, Vikas Swarup presents a kaleidoscopic vision of the struggle between good and evil - and what happens when one boy has no other choice in life but to survive.

W hen they made a film of Vikas Swarup's bestseller, they gave it an extreme makeover. But can I get the author to say anything critical about Danny Boyle's hit adaptation of his debut novel, about a penniless orphan who wins India's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Not a chance. Swarup, you see, is a diplomat. And not just any diplomat: his sumptuous business card, embossed with three golden lions, tells me he is minister and deputy high commissioner of India , based in Pretoria.

The film is set and filmed in India. Jamal is one question away from the grand prize.

When the novel opens, he is a a billionaire, having won the billion-rupee prize in a game show, and, b in jail, the producers having charged him with fraud. He is in jail because the producers of the show have no money to pay him, a fact you are made aware of on page seven. As a plot device, it works. Swarup paints different settings for his protagonist and uses humor to underline his insightful commentary on the social fabric of contemporary India. The chapters are not in chronological order, though. This is not a book for the squeamish.

Published in , it was the author's first novel. Set in India , it tells the rags to riches story of Ram Mohammad Thomas, a young waiter who becomes the biggest quiz show winner in history, only to be sent to jail on accusations that he cheated. Over the course of the novel, Ram Mohammed Thomas gives flashbacks of his life to explain to the police how he knew the answers to the show's questions - including the corruption he was faced with and had to overcome. The book is about destiny vs luck, and personal dedication. In , the book was loosely adapted into the multiple Oscar -winning movie Slumdog Millionaire , which features a new main character named Jamal and his brother Salim. The movie is a comment on how poverty and corruption poison the human spirit, and how to retain one's true self in the face of adversity.
