These are short answers to some of the more common questions I get asked. Please feel free to suggest additional questions in the comments section. W hile crows and ravens are in the same family, corvidae, and look quite similar, they are as different from one another as lions and tigers. More scientifically, ravens have diamond shaped tails in flight, deeper almost croak-like voices and are about 2. Once they reach sexual maturity around years they are tough to take out and can live to about 20 years old. In captivity they can live twice as long.

They do have beaks and tongues, but neither of these are used by a bird fix of talking birds; however, leave the crows' tongues alone please.

My name is Jenn and I love corvids. I study wild American crows and am constantly impressed by them, even after years of working with them. My goal on this blog is to spread the corvid love by sharing information and dispelling common myths. Feel free to ask me anything : These are truly some of the most fascinating birds on the planet! Is it true that if you split a crows tongue it can talk? When I was a kid I had a pet crow named Clifford. One day, when Clifford was about two years old, my dad grabbed the crow and held him down while I split his tongue with a razor blade. Clifford started talking immediately. First, he cussed us up one side and down the other; then he called the Humane Society and turned us in for cruelty to animals.

Post a Comment. Sunday, March 16, Crows and ravens I have been fascinated by crows for as long as I can remember. My mother used to tell of a local small town character who had a pet crow, he had raised it from a chick. According to legend, he had split the crows tongue, and the bird could talk. As a child I couldn't wrap my head around what would possess a person to split a birds tongue, how cruel! And why would doing that enable the bird to speak?
