A Study in Emerald by Neil Gaiman

Alluding to both the Sherlock Holmes canon and the Old Ones of the Cthulhu Mythos, this Hugo Award-winning short story will delight fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, H. P. Lovecraft, and of course, Neil Gaiman.

A Study in Emerald draws listeners in through carefully revealed details as a consulting detective and his narrator friend solve the mystery of a murdered German noble. But with its subtle allusions and surprise ending, this mystery hints that the real fun in solving this case lies in imagining all the details that Gaiman doesnt reveal, and challenges listeners to be detectives themselves.

I had entered a vastly darker Lovecraftian world and it had robbed the good doctor of his crack-shot ability by sucking life out of his shoulder. This would only come back to me, like a splash of cold water on a sleeping face, at the finale of the grand tale. In the dark mirrored world of H.

It is, in my honest opinion, hardly something that anyone into mystery and fantasy could or would refuse, or able to resist. Watson and Sherlock Holmes. In Sherlock Holmes , author Conan Doyle referred to the detective as a fine actor, and a master in the art of disguise. This is an alternative reality where fiction has become fact. The Old Ones have not only returned but have been ruling the earth for centuries. Opposition is rising, though, as humanity fights between itself to decide its future. Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriaty are but two figures caught in this struggle.

The story is a Sherlock Holmes pastiche transferred to the Cthulhu Mythos universe of horror writer H. Lovecraft ; it has subsequently been available as part of Gaiman's short story collection Fragile Things , in the collection New Cthulhu: The Recent Weird , and is available online. The online version takes the form of a Victorian periodical or newspaper, which includes various advertisements that reference characters such as Vlad Tepes , Victor Frankenstein , Spring Heeled Jack , and Dr. When asked if Gaiman had any plans to make a followup set in the world of the story, Gaiman said: "I hope so. I know the title and the protagonist of the next story in it. The story begins with its as yet unnamed narrator, a veteran of a bloody war against the "gods and men of Afghanistan", where he has been brutally tortured and his arm injured, setting the scene for things to come.

A Study in Emerald was first written by Neil Gaiman in as a short story. Last month, Dark Horse released the graphic novel adaptation of it. My review will be on that adaption. When a member of the royal family is murdered, the London police enlist the skills of a renowned detective to help catch the killer. The sordid streets of Victorian Londan lead the sleuth and his ex-soldier side-kick down a twisted path. It all fits together well enough, and makes for an entertaining read, for the most part. Toward the end of the book the detective and his sidekick think they have the perfect trap set for the killer s but are surprised by a sudden turn of events that spoil their victory.
