Daytripper by Fabio Moon

What are the most important days of your life?

Meet Bras de Oliva Domingos. The miracle child of a world-famous Brazilian writer, Bras spends his days penning other peoples obituaries and his nights dreaming of becoming a successful author himself—writing the end of other peoples stories, while his own has barely begun.

But on the day that life begins, would he even notice? Does it start at 21 when he meets the girl of his dreams? Or at 11, when he has his first kiss? Is it later in his life when his first son is born? Or earlier when he might have found his voice as a writer?

Each day in Brass life is like a page from a book. Each one reveals the people and things who have made him who he is: his mother and father, his child and his best friend, his first love and the love of his life. And like all great stories, each day has a twist hell never see coming...

In Daytripper, the Eisner Award-winning twin brothers Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba tell a magical, mysterious and moving story about life itself—a hauntingly lyrical journey that uses the quiet moments to ask the big questions.

Daytripper originally ran as a monthly comic from February through November last year, and the collection was published as a trade paperback in February this year. When I argued that comics are serious literature , Daytripper was exactly the sort of book I wanted to see — if you know anyone who still isn't convinced that comics can be great literature, here's some more ammunition for you. It's been nominated for Best Limited Series Eisner Award this year and is well deserving of the honor. Just one note here since I'll have some spoilers later: the book, while beautifully written and illustrated, is not for kids. The book does include a brief sex scene, some swearing, and a few violent scenes as well. I'd recommend it for adults and maybe mature teenagers though you should probably preview it first before handing it off to your teen.

Daytripper is a masterpiece, so good that it is difficult to explain. Let's try.

They have their friends and their family; it's their home. They have been telling stories in comic book form for almost fifteen years, and their work has been published in France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Japan, Germany, as well as in the U. They like their coffee black, with no sugar, so that the taste is strong and memorable.

Each death represents how any moment can be our last and we never know when that moment will really come. Each death, I feel, also represents how aspects of our lives can, and will die, and how they probably should. Death means something, and more than just the end for that character. Ba and Moon have managed to craft a comic that tells a story; it tells 10 of them in fact, but overall it tells one story and it does it well. It then also uses that story to make you think. This comic is easily one of the most emotional comics created for some time.

Who decides the course life takes? Is it the fickle winds of destiny that blow us from one event to the next, shaping our perception of human existence? Or do we choose the paths that our lives will take? If our paths are the result of our own free will, how do we decide what paths will be the most beneficial to our goals and personal happiness? Each issue shows Bras at a different time in his life and the choices he makes that shape the person he is.
