Mark Twain, Travel Books, and Tourism: The Tide of a Great Popular Movement by Jeffrey Melton

Winner of the Elizabeth Agee Prize for best manuscript in American Literature

With the publication of The Innocents Abroad (1869), Mark Twain embarked on a long and successful career as the 19th centurys best-selling travel writer. Jeffrey Melton treats Twains travel narratives in depth, and in the context of his contemporary travel writers and a burgeoning tourism culture. As Melton shows, Twains five major travel narratives--The Innocents Abroad, Roughing It, Life on the Mississippi, A Tramp Abroad, and Following the Equator--demonstrate Twains mastery and reinvention of the genre.

The following review appeared 15 August on the Mark Twain Forum. The first thing one notices about Jeffrey Alan Melton's Mark Twain, Travel Books, and Tourism --because it happens in the first two pages--is that Melton twice uses the word "beloved. Perhaps that is why this reviewer, who compulsively attacks books with her editorial pencil, has made not a single mark in this one, keeping all her notes on a separate pad of paper.

To view Mark Twain as a split, often conflicted personality is a popular approach to examining the man and his literary achievement.
