Over the past few years many of us were so consumed with the conversion from ICD-9 to ICD that we forgot the diagnosis code set is updated annually around this time of year. This year not only are we poised for diagnosis coding changes on October 1, , but the specificity grace period will also expire. During the transition to ICD many physicians, billers, coders, and managers were afraid providers would not know how to choose the correct diagnosis codes, and provide detailed enough clinical documentation to support the most specific ICD code. In light of this CMS, and a few other private payers, decided to give providers a grace period allowing ICD codes to be accepted as long as they were within the correct diagnostic family.

The update contains new codes and revised codes and removes 51 codes, bringing the total number of codes to 71, The first three characters categorize the injury, and the fourth through sixth characters describe in greater detail the cause, anatomical location and severity of an injury or illness.
