Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress by Steven Pinker

If you think the world is coming to an end, think again: people are living longer, healthier, freer, and happier lives, and while our problems are formidable, the solutions lie in the Enlightenment ideal of using reason and science.

Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? In this elegant assessment of the human condition in the third millennium, cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, which play to our psychological biases. Instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise, not just in the West, but worldwide. This progress is not the result of some cosmic force. It is a gift of the Enlightenment: the conviction that reason and science can enhance human flourishing.

Far from being a naive hope, the Enlightenment, we now know, has worked. But more than ever, it needs a vigorous defense. The Enlightenment project swims against currents of human nature–tribalism, authoritarianism, demonization, magical thinking–which demagogues are all too willing to exploit. Many commentators, committed to political, religious, or romantic ideologies, fight a rearguard action against it. The result is a corrosive fatalism and a willingness to wreck the precious institutions of liberal democracy and global cooperation.

With intellectual depth and literary flair, Enlightenment Now makes the case for reason, science, and humanism: the ideals we need to confront our problems and continue our progress.

O ur parties are the Democrats and the Republicans as electoral and governing bodies, liberals and conservatives in ways of thinking. Increasingly, Democrats are liberals and Republicans are conservatives, the phenomenon known as polarization, by which we more and more divide ourselves politically, in our parties, by our ways of thinking. We tend to think as partisans facing opponents. Our current polarized parties make this truth only more apparent. On progress, an interesting problem appears in the facts of American politics: on the one hand, progressives keep gaining their point, the latest one being the growing success of same-sex marriage; on the other hand, their opponents keep resisting progress, own half the electorate, and win half the elections. This is what progressives expect. But such obduracy might also suggest that progressives do not control the progress they espouse and that there is something permanent in the nature of politics about resistance to progress that sustains conservatives, despite their steady losses.

The Green Party has come a long way since it began standing for election in This article will analyse the reasons for this Green Surge, the politics of it and the situation the British Greens find themselves in following the results. Up to , it systematically lost all its deposits and without the help of Edward Goldsmith, it would, no doubt, have disappeared from the political stage before M. Thatcher came to power in Caroline Lucas received glowing praise for her work in Parliament, the political visibility of the Green Party shot up which is one of the principal aims of a minority party in a non-majority electoral system and more media light was shed on the work of local greens around the country, in councils other than Brighton. And was this election a non-event for the Greens who are still as far away from institutional political power as ever or can they take some positives away from it? We will firstly analyse the parameters of the green surge in terms of its internal and external dimensions.

The party's policies are based on the Austrian School of economics. It campaigns for a minimal state, free markets, free banking and currency competition, decentralization of political power, subsidiarity and direct democracy. It rejects nationalism, racism and any kind of anti-democratic politics, whether from left or right, and censorship of the internet. The party's first participation in German state elections was in the North Rhine-Westphalia state election on 13 May , but it did not secure any seats in the Landtag.
