Mr. and Mrs. Scotland Are Dead: Poems 1980-1994 by Kathleen Jamie

There is a wonderful freshness and clarity about her imagery and word choice.

Brilliant sense of humour e.g. in The Queen of Sheba & Arraheids.

Loved the imaginative characterisations of the pilot & nurse in A Flame in My Heart series of poems.

Best of all the cycle in The Autonomous region where fact & fiction & myth became interlaced into a brilliant whole. These the most powerful poems in the collection.

Jamie is not just a poet of rural beauty and splendor, but also of the urban, down at heel & squalid. She pictures these beautifully and raises hope out of the unpromising.
