Who Was Amelia Earhart? by Kate Boehm Jerome

Amelia Earhart is incredible.

Everyone knows she was the first female to fly the Atlantic solo (she was also the first female to cross the Atlantic in a plane as a passenger) and how her story ended, but I didnt know about all the other ways she was amazing.

First off, she was just a wicked cool person. She always knew her own mind and didnt let society dictate what she should do or be. Even though her family had a lot of money, when she went away to school shed tell her mom not to send any money for clothes because she didnt want them and she usually bought her stuff secondhand. I love how down-to-earth she is.

When she was a little girl they went a World Fair and she saw a roller coaster. She decided that she was going to build one. It nearly caused her to run into a horse but she ended up going through its legs instead!

She didnt want to get married because she didnt want to give up her career. She didnt see why women had to choose. Even when a guy she liked followed her across the country because he still wanted to marry her, she said no because she wanted to be free to live her life the way she wanted.

She loved learning to fly. Its lucky her parents had the money to support her lessons at first, later on, when there were money troubles, Amelia worked hard and did things she didnt really want to, (writing and speaking) to help earn money to keep flying.

She met George Putnam when he asked her to be a female passenger crossing the Atlantic. Even though she didnt fly the plane, since she was the first woman, she still got a lot of attention and that helped jumpstart her own flying career and eventually she became the first woman to fly the Atlantic solo.

She inspired a lot of women and young girls. She helped start a flying club for women and helped an airline company convince more people to fly. She did stunts and always pushed herself.

I wish wed gotten more time with Amelia. Shes phenomenal and in her short life inspired many people.
