Work Hard. Be Nice.: How Two Inspired Teachers Created the Most Promising Schools in America by Jay Mathews

When Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin signed up for Teach for America right after college and found themselves utter failures in the classroom, they vowed to remake themselves into superior educators. They did that—and more. In their early twenties, by sheer force of talent and determination never to take no for an answer, they created a wildly successful fifth-grade experience that would grow into the Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP), which today includes sixty-six schools in nineteen states and the District of Columbia.

KIPP schools incorporate what Feinberg and Levin learned from Americas best, most charismatic teachers: lessons need to be lively; school days need to be longer (the KIPP day is nine and a half hours); the completion of homework has to be sacrosanct (KIPP teachers are available by telephone day and night). Chants, songs, and slogans such as Work hard, be nice energize the program. Illuminating the ups and downs of the KIPP founders and their students, Mathews gives us something quite rare: a hopeful book about education.

Work Hard. Be nice. My mom taught me this lesson in a million ways. Follow the golden rule. Treat others the way you want to be treated. I understand this directive on a visceral level. KIPP, a national network of free public charter schools, share a core set of operating principles known as the Five Pillars.

To achieve breakthrough in our leadership, or in any endeavor, it stands to reason that we must work hard at getting better. And we have to learn, and strive, and grow. There is a higher ambition contained within the DNA of hard work that asks us to rise to the duty of helping those around us to be their best — in tandem with our own pursuit of personal growth. Every single day, that challenge for improvement begins with us. In each moment , we have to model the behavior of doing the hard work if we want the people we lead to do the same. With a tenacious, resolute approach, we can lift performance ever-higher. Being tough on standards is a bold way to value ourselves and others; it denotes faith in our shared capacity for outstanding achievement, and trust in our shared commitment to follow through.

Benjamin Sohr: Work Hard and Be Nice to People

I admit it, I like to search for my own work on the internet. I like to see where my work goes, who uses it and what people think of it. It also helps my ego, which as a creative person is a fragile and delicate thing. However, there is a flip side. As part of my online monitoring regime I check Etsy every now and then to look for my work.
