18 Perfect Read-Alouds for Teaching Growth Mindset

Growth Mindset, a term coined by Carol Dweck , a Stanford University psychologist, is the idea that when people change their beliefs about their own efforts, they can better adapt to create successful outcomes. In other words, when you believe that you will succeed after practice and effort, your odds of doing so improve. So, how do you introduce the concepts associated with growth mindset to your class? Here are 10 books to start a discussion and help your students change their perception about their abilities and efforts. Perseverance and creativity are key to creating marvelous things, but what happens whey things go awry? What would it be like to never make a mistake?

Picture books are a fantastic way to convey important growth mindset concepts to your students. In the upper grades, you might get a few snickers, but in most cases, students and, ahem, adults really enjoy picture books. My goal is to help you plan your growth mindset instruction by providing a summary of each book as well as a list of the MAIN growth mindset topics that are covered in each book. One easy way to encourage growth mindset is through engaging, purposeful read-alouds. Here are some of our favorite growth mindset books for kids, all of which can help jumpstart conversations about failure, risk-taking, and persistence. In this story, a child discovers that it takes courage to take chances and say yes to new opportunities. But in the end, taking chances can lead to incredible experiences. After much observation and lots of stall tactics he finally works up the courage to face his fears and take a leap. Sometimes things that look like smudgy messes actually evolve into the most beautiful pictures. Beautifully illustrated, this story teaches us that creating art and life is a process that requires patience and faith.
