Catcher in the Rye - The Red Hunting Hat
The Catcher in the Rye
Jul 17, AM. The red people hunting hat that Holden wears is very symbolic and everyone can interpret it differently. I think of it as something that gives him confidence, he wears it when he writes about Allie's baseball glove but, he can also be self conscious about it, too, he takes it off sometimes because he doesn't want to look suspicious and wears when he doesn't think he's going to see anyone he knows. But I still think it gives him some kind of confidence, it makes him feel good. And then at the end of the novel, Phoebe takes the red hunting hat out of Holden's pocket and puts it on his head. Sort of like she's saying, 'Here, this can keep the rain out of your eyes and gives you the confidence to keep going, so, wear it.
