10 Bible Verses About Making Disciples

What does the Bible say about? And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.

The life of discipleship was anticipated in the Old Testament, made explicit in the Gospels, and fleshed out in the Epistles and other New Testament writings. The word denotes a master or teacher — student relationship, and meant that the student would follow in the path of life laid out by his or her master. Discipleship is the highest calling, core identity, and central task of the church. Discipleship cannot be named among one of the activities of the church, it is what the church is and does. Before Jesus ascended to heaven, he made clear in the Great Commission that making disciples was the call of the church Matthew As a community, a church cannot tag discipleship onto its multi-level programs, it must be the core purpose behind everything the church is and does, including its worship, evangelism, social witness, multi-generational programs, etc. Disciples of Jesus seek to glorify their Lord by becoming like him in all respects.

Why should God let you into Heaven?

Yet our understanding of how to live out the command is often foggy. Since becoming a Christian, I have lived in four different cities, and I have been involved in numerous discipleship movements. I have learned that there is not a cookie-cutter approach to discipleship laid out for us in Scripture. The process should look unique to each of us, depending on our strengths, our context, and our training. However, as we determine how to make disciples in our unique situations, there are principles and examples throughout Scripture that we must be careful to adhere to. In his letter to the Colossians, Paul writes two brief sentences from which I have drawn five fundamental principles of discipleship.

A Christian disciple is a follower of Christ, but one thing you must know is the cost of following Jesus Christ is your life. It will cost you everything. You will have to say no to temptations and the things of this world. You will have to follow Him through trials, suffering, loneliness, humiliation, etc. We must depend on grace. We must not rely on ourselves, but we must rely on the Holy Spirit. Disciples of Christ imitate Christ and bring glory to God.
