Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini + CD by Paul Vance

Absolutely delightful. A trip down memory lane for adults, this catchy tune from the 1960s, written by Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss and recorded by Brian Hyland, will stick in your mind for a very long time. I recommend you listen to Deborah Mailmans rendition of this song on CD (provided with the book) before you read the book. My granddaughter wants to read this book every night and I know she will be disappointed when she has to return it to the library. I had never envisioned a hippo as the beach going, bikini wearer in the song, but she is perfect for the role. Typical humorous Kerry Argent illustrations capture the girls emotions perfectly and also give a wonderful picture of a typical day at the beach in Australia, with all the other Australian animals doing beachy activities. I wonder why a hippo was chosen when the other characters are Australian animals. Maybe it is part of her being different, right from the start.

The Hyland version reached number one on the Billboard Hot , selling a million copies in the US, and was a worldwide hit. The song has been adapted into French as " Itsy bitsy petit bikini " and into German as " Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Honolulu-Strand-Bikini ", reaching number one on national charts in both languages. Several versions of the song have proved successful in various European countries. The story told through the three verses of the song is as follows: 1 the young lady is too afraid to leave the locker where she has changed into her bikini; 2 she has made it to the beach but sits on the sand wrapped in a blanket; and 3 she has finally gone into the ocean, but is too afraid to come out, and stays immersed in the water — despite the fact that she's " turning blue " — to hide herself from view.
