2 States Book Review
The writer took inspiration from his own life, but the novel is a work of fiction. The novel is based on the story of a couple, who belongs to different states, castes and religion and wanted to get married. How they meet at IIMA campus and the way they convince their parents for their marriage is the actual plot of the novel. Soon they become good friends and their friendship turns into love and they start to live together. After the course both of them get job in the companies they have wished. Then Krish proposes to Ananya for marriage.
Bhagat wrote this novel after quitting his job as an investment banker. The story is about a couple Krish and Ananya, who hail from two different states of India, Punjab and Tamil Nadu respectively, who are deeply in love and want to get married. It is narrated from a first person point of view in a humorous tone, often taking digs at both Tamil and Punjabi cultures. The story begins in the IIM Ahmedabad mess hall where Krish, a Punjabi boy from Delhi sights a beautiful girl Ananya, a Tamilian from Chennai quarreling with the mess staff about the food. Ananya was tagged as the "Best girl of the fresher batch". They become friends within a few days.
He churns out bestsellers which tempt filmmakers to lend them to big screen adaptations. The success ratio of Hindi movies inspired by Chetan Bhagat's books has so far been high, and with the promising response to "2 States", he seems to be cementing his space in the Bollywood circuit. This is the third adaptation after Three Idiots in and Kai Po Che last year, that were runaway hits. Perhaps a line in the movie that translates to 'I want to write stories that are real', explains it all -- at least for the mass movie-going Indian audience. Today you displayed it to the nation. Thank you for the phenomenal opening.

Another movie adaptation of your novel, this one very close to home. How much of your true-life love story has the film managed to capture? Yes indeed, 2 States is quite close to me, because the inspiration came from my own life. The key plot points are from my life, but there is fictionalization and drama added as well. How much of your romantic and marital life would we see in 2 States? Not much of my martial life, as the film ends with the couple getting married. Ek Duuje Ke Liye is a classic from the 80s.
