A light mist began to accompany the dense fall air hanging over the Motor City — and black smoke was billowing into the massive light standards that were shining down over the roof of Tiger Stadium. From my post at the corner of Cochrane and Kaline Drive where I had sold peanuts and Detroit Tigers souvenirs for the past three seasons there were three things of which I was certain: the Detroit Tigers were World Champions, we were caught in the middle of a riot, and Tiger Stadium was on fire. The incredible campaign was over. The joyful outcome for which I had been praying all year had finally occurred: the Detroit Tigers had just won the World Series. In and the same thing [had happened]. Wilcox knew his ailing shoulder needed surgery, a procedure that would shelve him for months, possibly for the full year, and perhaps end his career. The only way that he could get through an entire season with the shoulder was to take a radical approach. He determined that he would get cortisone shots to numb the arm and mask the pain.
The World Series began on October 9 and ended on October 14, This was the city of Detroit's first sports championship since the Tigers themselves won the World Series. This was the first World Series that Peter Ueberroth presided over as commissioner. Ueberroth began his tenure on October 1, succeeding Bowie Kuhn. Ueberroth had been elected as Kuhn's successor prior to the season, but did not take over until the postseason as he was serving as the chairman of the Summer Olympics , which ran from July 28 through August This was the last World Series in which the designated hitter was used for games played in a National League team's ballpark in the World Series as in even-numbered years, the DH would be used in all games, which was first instituted in Starting in , the DH would only be used in games played at the American League representative's park.
